Chapel of St. Peter

Saint Peter’s Roman Catholic Church occupies a prominent location on the heights above Harpers Ferry. At one time, St. Peter’s was a fully operating parish but was closed in 1995.  St. James Parish in Charles Town was given responsibility over St. Peter in Harpers Ferry.  St. Peter’s is now maintained as a historic chapel within Harpers Ferry National Park.

Mass is celebrated on Sundays at 9:30 a.m.

St. James also assumed responsibility for the historic cemetery of St. Peter. It is situated on a hillside west of town with a beautiful view of the gap where the Potomac River and the Shenandoah River meet. The cemetery is the final resting place of some notable figures, including Luke Quinn (the Marine killed in the assault on John Brown’s Fort), and Father Michael Costello (the pastor of St. Peter’s during the Civil War).
