Saint Joseph School has been providing a solid Catholic education since 1883. Started by the Daughters of Charity from Emmitsburg, Md., the school was first housed in a two-story wooden building with four classrooms on East Stephen Street. The building was moved to the west side of South Queen Street in the late 1880s, and in 1905, a four-year high school was introduced. The eight-member Class of 1915 was the first to graduate from the high school. The wooden building was long ago replaced, and the high school closed in 1972.
Students ages 2 and 3 start their educational journey as Little Crusaders and members of the Pre-K Jr. classes in the former high school building.
Twenty years ago, Saint Joseph School moved to its current location at 110 E. Stephen St., where the growth of academic, spiritual, social and emotional skills continues for those ages 4 through eighth grade. Math, language arts, science, social studies, and religion are core subjects, and students attend Mass weekly at Saint Joseph Church.
Participation in county math, science, and social studies competitions and various writing contests is also part of the Crusader experience, as are engaging projects, hands-on learning, and meaningful field trips. There also are opportunities to participate in sports, musical productions, choir, band, private piano lessons, school dances, movie nights, and so much more.
Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year is underway at the only Catholic school in the Eastern Panhandle. For more information, contact Kaitlyn Henry at khenry@sjswv.org, call 304-267-6447 or go to sjswv.org.
